News. Music. Politics.

About Samantha Ohlson

Hi, my name is Samantha Ohlson. I am a news and music double major at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. I also have a minor in politics.

Drake Universityabout me

At Drake, I am heavily involved in the music and journalism departments. I play tenor saxophone in Tiberius Saxophone Quartet and Drake University Wind Symphony. In my time at Drake, I have also played in Drake Jazz Ensemble II and sang in the Drake University Community Chorus.  I am the President of Sigma Alpha Iota, Pi Chapter, an international music fraternity. I am a copy editor and contributing writer for The Times-Delphic, the student-led newspaper on Drake’s campus. I am involved in Society of Professional Journalists, and I am a former standing co-recruitment coordinator. I was also a contributor for the Iowa Caucus Project blog during the 2016 Iowa Caucus season.

I have gained a variety of useful skills through my education at Drake. I have experience in InDesign and PhotoShop. I have written a number of articles and been able to interview everyone from students to adults at a Clinton rally. I am able to code and design websites. In April 2016, I was able to record a CD with the Drake Wind Symphony. I travelled to Egypt for two weeks in January 2017 to learn about Islam with 18 classmates. My education has always been important to me, and Drake has allowed me to pursue my passions for writing and music, while gaining a background in politics as well.

After I graduate from Drake in December 2018, I plan to work for a news media organization to report on politics or attend graduate school. I would like to continue to incorporate music in my life through playing in small ensembles.

More About Me

I grew up in West Union, a small town in rural northeast Iowa. I was active in band, choir, dance, theater, speech, student government, and cheerleading, so I am no stranger to communication and performing!

My hobbies include playing saxophone, piano, and flute. I also enjoy long walks by large bodies of water and silently correcting grammar. I love spending lots of time in bookstores and coffee shops. In Des Moines, I love to get student rush tickets to see the national tours of Broadway shows that come to the Civic Center. I am always interested in learning new things, which is why I decided to pursue a career in journalism. Journalism gives the opportunity to learn and experience something new every day!
