The Beginning

I have been taking music lessons since I was nine years old, when I began taking piano. I have been obsessed with music ever since.

At age ten, I began learning saxophone through fifth grade band. I played saxophone and sang in choir throughout high school, participating in as many ensembles, contests, festivals, and honor bands/choirs as I could. In high school, I studied saxophone under Lynne Hart.

Current Music Projects

I have continued to pursue my passion for music throughout college, as I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in music at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

I currently study saxophone under Dr. Jim Romain. I have also taken piano lessons during college and have learned to play flute and clarinet. Currently, I play tenor saxophone in the Drake University Wind Symphony and Tiberius Saxophone quartet, the premier ensembles of their kind at Drake.

In college, I have also performed with Drake Jazz II, Drake University/Community Chorus, Drake University Wind Ensemble, Luther College Wind Ensemble, Luther College Jazz Band, and Cantorei Choir at Luther College.

Last spring, I was able to record the album Confluences with the Drake University Wind Symphony under the direction of Robert Menuier. I have also toured in Chicago with this ensemble.

I have performed at the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 Conference with the JAMS Saxophone Quartet, and played at Iowa Saxophone Day with Tiberius Quartet.

Sigma Alpha Iota

Sigma Alpha Iota is an international, professional music fraternity for women. I was initiated into Pi Chapter at Drake University in April 2015. I am the current president of the chapter after serving a term as vice president, membership last year.

Our chapter works to promote music in the Des Moines area through several events each year. Our annual 3K, Run for Pie, raises money for Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. Our other events, Practice-a-Thon (in conjunction with Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia) and Mr. Music raise money for Des Moines music organizations or school music programs.

Through this organization, I have been able to volunteer and provide music opportunities for many. I have also performed solo and in ensembles for the fraternity. As president and vice president, membership, I have gained valuable leadership skills.

Lessons

I am available to teach saxophone lessons in the Des Moines area. Please contact me at samantha.ohlson@drake.edu for more information.
